My daughter, newly diagnosed with RA (following me, and my mum!!) has not really been sorted out with medication yet - trying MTX still - with limited success, but is moving from Oxford to London in Sept (for new uni course). She's at Nuffield in Oxford at the moment, but can anyone recommend a good hospital in London for RA. The Uni is in the centre so it doesn't really matter where - or is it better to go back to Oxford each time?

Otherwise I'm wondering whether she'd be better in Portsmouth where I am... but that's a bit of a trek!!

Everyone seems to have such different experiences of their hospitals... so any suggestions would be really helpful.

Now I'm hoping for some sun this week, as it does make me feel a lot better!! Can't keep going off abroad for holidays!!!

Humira doing well so far... 3 months in - would recommend it. ThumpUp

Hi Anne, I go to Guy's at London Bridge. There are several consultants in the department so its quite busy. I have been satisfied with the care I receive, I was diagnosed in July 2009, and am about to go on anti-TNF treatment after failing two DMARDs. St Thomas hospital at Westminster Bridge Road has a very good reputation, so might be an idea to look there too. Hope this helps you a little, and that your daughter finds a good rheumatologist.Smile

Hi,

I live in Oxford and am happy at Nuffield Orthopaedic, but... I used to live in London and I was first treated at Guy's 20 years ago (in fact I was born there 39 years ago, and my mum trained and worked there as a nurse, so it felt like the family hospital). However, after a spell away from London (in Glasgow and then Hong Kong) I went back to London and Guy's and was really unhappy with the outpatients clinic - it was so busy that I was never seen on time, and I felt the staff didn't know who I was even though I was there really often. So I switched to Kings College Hospital in Denmark Hill (Camberwell / Peckham) and it was great, really lovely people, great system, great team of specialist nurses, excellent doctors and they embrace fibromyalgia and take it seriously, and for a while ran a specialist clinic for people with RA and fibromyalgia - I wish the Nuffield would deal with fibromyalgia properly I can't even get the team there to address it! Of course Guy's is good, but I found Kings to be more personal and more friendly and just as good in terms of medical expertise. Good luck.

Hi Anne,

I'm at King's College Hospital in Denmark Hill for Rheumy and also Renal. I've found the Rheumy dept really good. As a new patient I saw the top consultant who spent ages with me and was very thorough, I've since seen other docs but they all report back, so the head consultant has a lot of input and the docs all seem to be quite familiar with the patient cases. The Rheumy Nurse has also been brilliant. The department is friendly and waiting times are pretty good, I'm usually seen after a very short wait. Parking at the hospital is expensive but The Fox on the Hill Weatherspoons pub is close and happy for hospital patients to park there, it's a short walk, which I manage even with my stick (otherwise it'd be 2 trains with way too many stairs or 3 buses!). I sometimes 'treat' myself to a coffee at the pub afterwards, although the hospital cafes are nicer!

I've been under Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital for other surgery/clinics and had no complaints, particularly St Thom's where I was an inpatient. When I was referred to Renal I had been on tour and in a few hospitals but wanted to be based at a good one. It was the days before you could choose your hospital, so I researched the top Renal department for treatment and research and told the hospital referring me I was moving to digs near King's so they'd refer me there! I now live fairly nearby and so it made sense to stay there for Rheumy too.

Good luck with the Hospital hunt!

Vicky xx

How do you manage to choose your London hospital? I live in Hackney and was told I have to go to Homerton (which is fine as consultant is brilliant, and rheumy nurse fine too) and couldn't go to central London hospitals. I don't want to change at the moment, but just curious to know in case I ever want to. Polly

Thanks everyone for your advice.

The reason we can choose is because she is going to have to get Oxford Nuffield in July to refer her for Sept - and we have no idea where she will be living - nor will probably until the last minute!!
